The University of Notre Dame (ND.jobs) is accepting applications for a Preventive Conservation Specialist.

The Preventive Conservation Specialist coordinates preventive conservation programs and projects that ensure access to Hesburgh Libraries' special collections, which include rare books, manuscripts, and archival collections. Programs include holistic collection-wide solutions in combination with vended and in-house treatment interventions. Treatments include minor stabilization treatments, fabrication of exhibition cradles and mounts, and creation of custom protective enclosures to facilitate storage and use of fragile collections. Advises on care and handling practices and assists with other preventive conservation programs, including environmental monitoring and emergency response.
Essential Duties:

  • Assesses preservation needs of collections. In collaboration with conservators, curators, archivists, and other subject specialists; prioritizes needs and develops preventive conservation measures. Oversees and refines preventive conservation programs and workflows to match needs.

  • Trains and supervises student assistants. Helps train and guide workflow for Conservation Fellow(s).

  • Constructs custom enclosures to enable vulnerable collections to be safely stored and used. Performs minor to intermediate paper conservation treatments to stabilize collections for use. Treatments may include mending, flattening rolled or folded documents, cleaning documents, and Bookkeeper deacidification treatment. Documents treatments in accord with professional best practices.

  • Physically prepares special collections for exhibitions. Assesses collections for vulnerabilities, specifies treatment solutions in collaboration with conservators, and designs and constructs display solutions. Coordinates vended solutions, including matting and framing. Balances multiple exhibitions and occasionally provides specialized exhibition support for other campus departments.

  • Supports preservation of collections during digitization. Collaborates with key stakeholders in other units to develop and refine workflows. Consults regarding handling of materials during digitization, and develops and implements handling solutions.

  • Serves a key facilitating role in managing environmental conditions in collection storage areas as well as in collections emergency preparedness and response programs.

  • Participates in unit outreach by providing training and consultation in established care and handling techniques to special collections staff and student assistants. Contribute to unit's social media presence.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree
  • Demonstrated potential and interest in performing detailed hand work with a high level of efficiency and precision.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of highly collaborative teams.
  • Excellent office computing skills, including word processing and spreadsheets.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education and/or work experience in research libraries and/or research library preservation.
  • Experience training staff and/or student employees.
  • Experience working with a database. applications.
  • Project management experience.
