DUTY SCHEDULE:  12 Months
 
ROLE OVERVIEW:
KIPP Houston Public Schools seeks strong leaders to serve as School Leader at either a KIPP Houston Primary, Middle, or High School. 

A KIPP Houston Public Schools School Leader is responsible for leading his/her school in a consistent and well-informed manner. The School Leader is in charge of hiring and supporting highly-qualified and certified faculty members that are dedicated to the mission, beliefs, and values of KIPP Houston. He/she must model the expectations for the school as articulated by the KIPP Houston Freedom Tree.  

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
 
The School Leader will:

1. Provide instructional leadership, management, & curriculum support
  • Monitor curriculum development and design to ensure that adequate resources are available to meet instructional needs
    • Ensure that school curriculum aligns with the mission, beliefs, priorities, and initiatives of KIPP Houston Public Schools
    • Ensure that school curriculum aligns with the Texas Education Agency requirements
  • Monitor classroom instruction and provide timely feedback to teachers
  • Analyze assessment data and set goals with faculty for ongoing improvement
  • Work with the Head of Schools to develop and implement long range plans for curriculum, instructional evaluation, and school improvements
 
2. Personnel Management
  • Interview, select, and orient new faculty
  • Define expectations for faculty performance with regard to instructional strategies, classroom management, and  communication with the public
  • Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct performance reviews  with faculty
    • Confer with faculty regarding professional growth and work with faculty to develop and accomplish improvement goals
  • Make recommendations on termination or suspension of employees
  • Plan professional development activities and facilitate professional development opportunities outside of the school
 
3. School and Organizational Morale
  • Provide instructional  resources and materials to support teaching faculty in accomplishing instructional goals
  • Fosters comradery and team building among faculty members
  • Encourage active faculty involvement in decision-making processes
  • Encourage open communication between faculty, students, parents and the community
  • Communicate and promote expectations for high-level performance to faculty and students
    • Includes appropriately recognizing and rewarding excellence and effectively addressing poor performance
  • Ensure the effective and quick resolution of conflicts
  • Implement a sharing platform that emphasizes culture building, culture lessons, and leadership development
 
4. Management of Fiscal, Administrative, and Facilities Functions
  • Comply with district and KIPP Houston Public Schools policies as well as state and federal laws and regulations affecting the schools
  • Develop an annual budget based on documented school needs, estimated enrollment, personnel, and other fiscal needs
    • Keep programs within budget limits, maintain fiscal control and accurately report fiscal information
    • Show a commitment to KIPP Houston Public Schools’ culture of thrift
  • Compile and maintain all reports, records, and other documents required, including accurate and timely reports
  • Manage the use and maintenance of all school facilities to ensure a clean, orderly, and safe campus
 
5. Student Management
  • Draft the student handbook at the beginning of the school year to be approved by the Head of Schools
  • Work with faculty and students to develop a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior and enhances the school climate
  • Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable in accordance with the student handbook
  • Conduct conferences about student behavior issues with parents, students, and teachers
  • Develop and follow clearly articulated plans for daily operations and implementation of student services; including support services, discipline management, and crisis intervention
  • Articulate the school’s mission to the community and solicit support in accomplishing the mission
  • Use appropriate techniques to encourage community and parent involvement
 
6. Professional Growth and Development
  • Attend and participate in monthly KIPP Houston Public Schools Leadership meetings
  • Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible behavior and serve as a role model for all faculty and students
  • Attend KIPP Houston Public Schools professional development conferences and retreats
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Education and Knowledge:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, with a focus in Education
  • 3-5 years of experience working with high performing public schools or with K-12 public education reform
 
 
Skills:
  • A passion for KIPP Houston Public Schools’ beliefs, mission, vision, values, and operating norms and a commitment to living them every day
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Energetic, self-starter attitude, comfortable working in an environment characterized by its fast pace and entrepreneurial spirit
  • Excellent attention to detail and high level of accuracy required
  • Excellent organizational skills required
  • Excellent leadership and management skills required; Ability to motivate, educate, and inspire both internal and external resources

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
  • Proficiency using computers, printers, copy machines, and fax machines
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel between campuses
